Winter weather warnings issued for 10 states as snow expected

National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists are snow warning in 10 states amid a series of winter weather advisories issued Wednesday and Thursday.

The snow is coming from two separate storm systems: one over the upper Midwest and one over the Pacific Northwest. For some states, it is first snowfall of the season, causing stronger advisories, said Peter Mullinax, a meteorologist with the NWS Weather Prediction Center. News week.

States under winter weather advisories with a risk of snow include Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Minnesota, Michigan, Montana, Wisconsin and Nevada.

For areas of the upper Midwest, Mullinax said the storm will leave a “band of snow” of 2 to 4 inches from central Minnesota to parts of northern Wisconsin and into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Minneapolis and St. Paul could also see light snowfall.

The system in the Pacific Northwest is a “series of small storm-integrated disturbances” moving through the region, Mullinax said, bringing a flow of moisture to several states.

Mullinax said the snow would likely be heaviest in the Cascades, where up to 3 feet was expected in high elevation areas. Winter weather advisories also extend to the northern Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and parts of the northern Rocky Mountains in southwest Montana and central Idaho.

He warned the snow would last for several days, with snowfall increasing overnight Thursday into Friday.

Many advisories warned of dangerous travel conditions.

“Snow covered roads, chain checks and possible travel delays. Hazardous conditions could impact commutes on Thursday morning and evening. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches,” it said. ‘view from Sacramento, California.

Some advisories warned of periods of heavier snowfall, particularly in Washington and California.

The Seattle, Washington, office said residents can expect a “brief break” in the more consistent snowfall Thursday before it intensifies overnight Thursday into Friday .

Some meteorologists have urged people to keep a winter emergency driving kit easily accessible in their car, including items like a flashlight, batteries, blankets, shovel, water, non-perishable food and tire chains.

Other areas warned that heavy rain would turn into heavy snow as the storms progressed.

“Widespread rain develops early this morning and will become heavy at times. As colder air begins to arrive this morning, rain will transition to heavy snow from west to east with snowfall at an inch per hour sometimes early in the afternoon,” the NWS Twin Cities office said. “A few embedded thunderstorms are also possible, which could increase snow rates further.”

In addition to winter weather advisories, other states were facing a wave of cold temperatures that triggered frost warnings and frost advisories. Parts of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and North Texas were under a Freeze Warning, with a Freeze Advisory also affecting parts of North Texas.
