Family of missing Wyoming hunter awaits search and rescue updates

An Encampment, Wyoming, man disappeared overnight while hunting in the Medicine Bow National Forest, the Carbon County sheriff said. reports.

James Johnson left Wednesday afternoon to hunt in the forest and did not return, said a statement from Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken posted on Facebook Thursday morning.

He was driving a Green 2003 Chevrolet Silverado four-door with a black bed. Authorities founde truck off Hope Park Road south of town on Thursday, Cory Nuhn, leader of the Encampment volunteer search and rescue group, told Cowboy State Daily on Thursday.

“There’s a (helicopter) in the air now,” Nuhn added Thursday around 12:15 p.m.

Local search and rescue personnel, sheriff’s personnel and volunteers are all searching, he said.

Johnson’s father, Jim Johnson, told Cowboy State Daily that he had nothing left to do but “sit and stew” while waiting for news.

His son hunted elk, he said.

Carbon County Search and Rescue is one of the best, and he can only believe his son will be found, the father said.

“All we can do is leave them alone, let them be,” he added.

The elder Johnson said his daughter-in-law and granddaughter were also at his home in Encampment and waiting for news. A grandson is helping with the search efforts.

The weather near Encampment reached an overnight low of 27 degrees Fahrenheit Wednesday, with some precipitation, according to timeanddate.com.
