Malco Power House Theater targeted by car burglars

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man’s night at the movies turned him into the victim of a crime in downtown Memphis Monday, and he’s waiting for police to do something.

He was at the Malco Power House Theater on Front Street celebrating his third anniversary with his fiancée when their movie was interrupted.

“While we were filming at the cinema, we encountered security. They asked us to come out and said our vehicle had been broken into,” the victim said.

But he says his car wasn’t the only one.

“He explained that my car was hit first, then five other cars right after,” the victim said. “The rear driver’s side window was broken. And like I said, they took my debit card and searched it a little bit.

He said security was at the theater but told him there was nothing they could do other than call the police.

“The security guards told me that this had happened several times before, and that’s why they were there to try to prevent it, but they are not allowed to do anything to confront them,” the victim said.

The victim claims police had come and gone by the time he went out to check the damage to his car, but they too were unable to stop the thieves in action.

“They told us they weren’t allowed to block them or go after them unless they committed a violent crime,” the victim said. “If they’re not allowed to do that, then, you know, there’s no point in really being there, the police, for a reason. And these people think it’s just a joke and it’s a game for them, they know they can get away with it.

He now says his calls to police for news of the case went unanswered. Even when the thieves tried to use his debit card at a gas station and he called to notify MPD, still nothing.

“I called three times, and each time I was told there was still no investigator assigned to the case,” the victim said. “He is waiting for approval. And I just want something done.

WREG contacted Memphis police, who said they were seeking an update on the case.

According to a police report, a security guard and a victim told police they saw two vehicles, an unmarked black Infiniti and an unmarked red Nissan, enter the parking lot. A suspect got out and broke into several vehicles. When they confronted him, he swore at them.

The report says six vehicles were broken into, with a handgun and a Taser among the items seized.

“It’s a bad feeling knowing that I can’t even take my fiancé on a date without something happening,” the victim said.

The crime victim says he also tried to get video footage from Malco showing what happened that night, but was told it could only be given to an investigator.

WREG has also reached out to Malco for comment and is awaiting a response.
