The house that started the Highland Lakes wildfire burned the same day the foreclosure case closed.

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — It’s been three days since a house fire turned into a wildfire, sparking widespread evacuations of people living in Teller County. The fire, which officials have since said was human caused, endangered about 700 homes near Highland Lakes.

But now, KRDO13 investigates has confirmed new details about the story of the house that started it all.

According to court documents, the house caught fire the same day a Teller County judge dismissed the foreclosure case on the home.

According to the Teller County Public Trustee’s Office, the home at 13 Beaver Lake Circle was under seizure and auctioned on November 13.

Online records show the property received two “Rule 120” notices, which real estate lawyers say is what is required in court for a property owner to be notified that a property is on the point of being sold.

Records show the most recent notice was sent on September 19.

Then, a little more than a month later, a judge issued a final order regarding the property. Records show the case was closed on Oct. 28, the day the house was engulfed in flames.

Officials with the Teller County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) said they are in contact with the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office regarding possible criminal charges against the person(s) responsible. However, TCSO also says the investigation into the fire could also determine it was simply an accident.

When last checked with TCSO, they said the fire was 90% contained.
