Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi charged with hate crime after allegedly shooting Jewish man in Chicago

The illegal migrant who allegedly opened fire on a Jew walk to the synagogue in Chicago last weekend was hit Thursday with new charges of hate crimes and terrorism, according to authorities.

Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, was hit with additional charges after allegedly fatally shooting a 39-year-old Jewish man Saturday morning in the city’s West Ridge neighborhood — and then getting into a shootout with authorities who led to his arrest.

“This shooting is deeply personal to members of our Jewish community, we know that,” Windy City Police Commissioner Larry Snelling said at a news conference. press conference broadcast locally. “But this shooting should be personal to everyone in the city.”

Just before exchanging gunfire with police, the alleged shooter reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar.” He was seriously injured in the shooting, during which medics were also caught in the crossfire. Abdallahi remained hospitalized Thursday.

Fortunately, the victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries and no emergency workers were injured.

Abdallahi was initially charged with attempted murder, attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated battery and aggravated discharge of a firearm.

The lack of hate crime charges early in the case infuriated members of the Jewish community. But Snelling said investigators needed time to confirm the offense as a hate crime and terrorism charge.

“There must be sufficient evidence to support accusations of hate crimes and terrorism and it was important that we took our time to fully investigate and confirm that this was indeed a crime of this nature.” , he said. “We did not get these charges because of public pressure or media attention. »

Detectives searched the suspect’s phone, which showed he was planning to target members of the Jewish community before the shooting, Snelling added.

A terrorism charge is rarely filed, Cook County Prosecutor Kim Foxx noted.

“We highlight the seriousness of targeting specific communities with violence intended to intimidate or terrorize,” she said. “This accusation sends a clear message.”

Mayor Brandon Johnson, who was lambasted earlier this week for failing to acknowledge that the victim was Jewish in an initial statement, called the hatred directed against the Jewish community “hideous.”

“There is absolutely no place in Chicago for anti-Semitism,” Johnson said at the news conference. “There is no place in our city for hatred toward the Jewish community.”

Abdallahi, originally from the West African country of Mauritania, entered San Diego in March 2023 and was screened by border agents before being released into the country, officials previously told The Post.

When the migrant was arrested at the border last year, authorities found no criminal or terrorist history linked to him, sources said.

Abdallahi was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, but that was delayed because he is still in the hospital, Foxx said.
