Awareness campaign to help children with trunk or treat

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — It’s Halloween night, which means many families have spent part of the evening trick-or-treating, or in this case, trick-or-treating.

Save a Life a Day hosted a trunk or treat event, with the goal of providing a path to safe shelter for local children and young adults. Their goal: to offer children the opportunity to dress up and celebrate Halloween when they otherwise wouldn’t be able to do so.

This trunk or treat, according to Save a Life a Day Outreach co-founder Jasmine Cummings, is designed to meet kids where they are. “Those disastrous years where you’re trying to figure everything out, we want to give them those tools or get them into the developmental places they need to be successful,” Cummings said.

Donshay Lewis, involved in Save a Life a Day, was one of the children he now hopes to help. “We’re here to hand out candy to kids, to try to stop gun violence,” Lewis said.

Lewis is the father of his four young boys and he has big dreams for them all. “I want my boys to go to school, graduate, go to college and do something with their lives,” Lewis said.

Lewis wants to see other young people in the community succeed as well. “As a father, I love seeing the kids in the community,” Lewis said. “I love seeing them do good.”

The first step to seeing them do good is, on Halloween night, letting these kids be kids, and that means handing out as much candy as possible!

The holiday festivities don’t stop at Halloween. On December 20, Save a Life a Day will host its 10th annual Christmas event at Gerald R. Ford Middle School.
