Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith said two people are dead and seven others are being treated at local hospitals after a mass shooting overnight in downtown Orlando. A 17-year-old boy is in police custody, he said.

The shooting was reported around 1:07 a.m. in the area of ​​Orange Avenue and Central Blvd., where hundreds of people were celebrating Halloween at bars, clubs and restaurants.

A few minutes later, a second gunshots were reported nearby. Police attended both locations, identified the suspected shooter and approached him. He is currently being questioned by detectives, Chief Smith said.

What do we know about the victims?

Two people died, Police Chief Smith said. He withheld their names pending notification of family.

The victims are aged 19 to 39, he said.

According to Orlando Health Regional Medical Center, they received nine injured patients during the incident.

This victim was not mentioned during the press conference.

  • 01:07 | First report of shots fired in the area of ​​Orange Avenue and Central Blvd. Officers heard gunshots and ran toward them, Chief Smith said. Massive crowds gathered in all directions.
  • A few minutes later | A second report of shots fired near nearby Orange Avenue and Washington Street. He was quickly caught by officers, the chief said.

What do we know about the alleged suspect?

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith identified the suspected shooter as a 17-year-old boy. The teenager was armed with a handgun, he said.

He was not shot by the police. No officers fired their weapons, the chief said.

A motive for the shooting was also not immediately known, but Chief Smith said detectives were speaking with the suspect.

The chief also mentioned that the suspect was previously arrested in 2023 for robbery. Details of the case were not immediately available.

Smith said the 17-year-old had not been downtown long before the shooting and did not appear to enter any of the businesses.

“He went downtown, took to the streets and did what he did,” Chief Smith said.

Police are investigating a shooting in downtown Orlando, where people were celebrating Halloween.

FOX 35’s cameras overlooking parts of downtown captured a large police presence along Orange Avenue and Central Avenue near Wall Street Plaza, where several bars, clubs and restaurants are located.

From one vantage point, crowds can be seen strolling down Orange Avenue, which is not uncommon on a holiday weekend in downtown Orlando. Moments later, crowds of people suddenly start running.

We then see several police officers running in the opposite direction.

Congressman Maxwell Frost, who represents Florida’s 10th District, posted a brief message on X, urging people to stay away from downtown. He mentioned reports of several people being affected.
