Aeternum, as Steam reviews say

Upon launch, New World broke records and amassed a massive player base of over a million concurrent players. But like my high school bully, this hulking monstrosity of an MMORPG somehow managed to reach its peak quickly and disappear from the face of the planet. Despite a mixed reception after its first month, Amazon Game Studios did not throw in the towel as many expected of them. Instead, they continued to refine gameplay, redesign entire areas, and give players a hand-crafted world with some of the best collecting and crafting elements in the genre. Now, a few years and just one expansion later, the team has revamped the experience with New World: Aeternum.

What is New World: Aeternum? It’s a total overhaul of the MMORPG, featuring large-scale PvP, 10-player raiding, single-player end-game content, a redesigned single-player experience for story-focused players, higher quality life, controller support… oh, and swimming mechanics. That’s a lot to take in, especially if you’re a returning gamer willing to give Amazon’s MMO one more chance.

However, if you’re a loyal player, remember that to access all of Aeternum’s content, you need the Rise of the Angry Earth expansion, which costs $29.99. That’s a steep price of entry for an MMO with a history of mediocrity in the eyes of many players.

That said, reviews are “mixed” on Steam after a lackluster launch – again – that left many fans fidgeting in their gaming chairs. However, most weren’t shy about leaving a negative review, so we have a lot to go through. Unfortunately, this time around it was difficult to find ASCII meme artwork or reviews, which is very unusual for Steam user reviews. Most people just wanted to complain about poor UI changes, controller support, and Amazon customer support. Despite the negativity, the game has consistently seen 40,000 concurrent players since the relaunch, although that’s only a micro-slice of the 913,000 it saw three years ago.
