TBI investigating officer-involved shooting in Cocke County

COCKE COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said agents are investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred in Cocke County early Friday morning.

According to TBI, preliminary information indicates deputies with the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office saw a vehicle driven by a person known to have an outstanding arrest warrant just before 1 a.m. Friday.

When officers attempted to stop the car, TBI said the driver refused to stop and led police on a chase.

The officers attempted to stop the car and arrest the driver in the 1700 block of Neddy Mountain Road in Del Rio, but during the encounter, for reasons still under investigation, the TBI said the officers had fired shots which hit the driver.

The suspect was then transported to a hospital for treatment, TBI said, adding that no deputies were injured.

TBI said its agents were working to determine the series of events that led to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

“The TBI only acts as an investigator in its cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified in these types of cases. This decision is up to the District Attorney General who is requesting TBI’s involvement,” officials said.

The officers and suspect involved in the shooting have not been identified.
