Bethesda residents worried after multiple intersection crashes in just two days

A car crash at a busy Bethesda intersection served as a frightening reminder to residents living nearby who told 7News when it comes to traffic safety, there has been a problem for a long time.

Two cars collided at the intersection of Aberdeen Road and Bradley Boulevard on Friday morning.

Jim Karrels, who lives in the neighborhood, said this was the third accident in the past two days.

Aberdeen Road has a stop sign on either side of Bradley Boulevard, while Bradley Boulevard does not have a stop sign at this intersection.

Karrels told 7News a car took out one of the stop signs during a crash Wednesday night. Hours later, on Thursday morning, another accident occurred in which a car destroyed the only other stop sign.

That means Friday morning’s crash happened when there were no stop signs at the busy intersection, according to Karrels.

“Wednesday evening a car ran through a stop sign and hit another car, the two cars ended up together, but the passengers, thank God, were okay. We told the police and firefighters who responded. presented at the scene that they had to replace the stop sign which was removed by one of the cars, and sure enough, 13 hours later, at 7 a.m. on Thursday, there was another accident. The same thing: a. “The car went sideways because there was no stop sign,” Karrels said. “Before this accident happened, there was no stop sign there, just like there was. There was no stop sign on the other side of the road. There have been no stop signs at this intersection for over 24 hours.”

Karrels said there was also another accident here in early October.

According to Montgomery County Interactive Accident Mapthere have been at least 18 accidents at this intersection since 2015.

“We knew it was going to happen again,” Karrels said. “We believe this should not be a transitional solution, as many reckless drivers are coming.”

However, the most recent crash on this map was in September 2023, over a year ago.

A county official told 7News this is because they have to wait to put a data point on the map until police complete the investigation and provide the information, which can take up to at one year.

Neighbors told 7News they’re not surprised by the number of accidents that happen here because of the speed at which people drive on Bradley Boulevard.

“I saw three or four accidents shortly after, and we heard other collisions,” said Léo Michel, another community member. “Things move very quickly here during rush hour. People speed, they don’t pay attention and they don’t wait. Visibility is not great for cars coming in this direction. Coming from this direction you can see the oncoming traffic, but there are hedges on both sides. You have to pull back to see if the traffic is coming or not.

In the meantime, Michel wants a study to be done to determine whether or not stop signs should be added on Bradley Boulevard.

“I sometimes wondered why there wasn’t a four-way stop sign here,” Michel said.
