Letters target some Fresno Democrats with Harris-Walz signs, voters say

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — Some northwest Fresno residents are shaken after receiving what they call “threatening letters” for openly supporting Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the election.

“I found a nasty letter. Threatening. Very strongly anti-immigration. And that they would bring all the immigrants to my house,” Hannah Krebs said.

Krebs had a Harris-Walz sign in her yard when she received the letter this week. He cites the Harris-Walz signs and says Krebs’ address is on a list of sanctuaries intended to house “illegal aliens.”

Michele Richtel had three signs in her yard. She also received the letter.

“I think it’s a threat because they’re inviting people to my house (and) the other 16 addresses listed,” Richtel said. “They invite people to come knock on our doors Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m..”

The letters come amid a national threat that government officials fear could lead to election-related violence.

“Were you scared? asked Action News. “I don’t think so,” Krebs said. “Shaken, yes.”

The letter Action News saw was two pages long. The first page addressed owners and the second page addressed “all undocumented migrants” in three languages.

Richtel said she alerted authorities, and on Thursday Action News asked Fresno County Prosecutor Lisa Smittcamp about the letters.

“It’s totally inappropriate for people to do this,” Smittcamp said. “It doesn’t matter who you vote for. You should be able to put a sign for the candidate you support in front of your home or business and not expect someone to do something intimidating like that.”

Richtel has now installed cameras facing the street, but it will not remove its signs.

“I had three signs in my yard, and the same day I came here and got eight more,” Richtel said.

It is unclear whether these letters constitute a crime or illegal voter intimidation. There was no record of who sent the letter, as the delivery and return addresses were listed as “DNC Chair.”
