Recent Jets roster move could stop Chargers and Mike Williams reunion

THE Los Angeles Chargers might be looking for some wide receiver help before the November 5 trade deadline (fans sure hope so), but the options for a quality addition are becoming increasingly limited.

Other contending teams have already taken steps to acquire Amari Cooper, Deandre Hopkins and Diontae Johnson, but the Chargers are rumored to be interested in bringing in Mike Williams, their former first-round pick, who left this season in free agency. Williams is now with the New York Jets, but has been used sparingly in recent weeks, especially after the team acquired Davante Adams in a trade of their own.

Williams was good when he was healthy for the Chargers, but it wasn’t often enough and was likely a huge contributor on the team that moved on from him this offseason. That said, he would be a solid addition to the team’s current group of wide receivers, which has dealt with numerous injuries so far this season.

But the Jets could dash any hope of that coming to fruition.

The Jets placed wide receiver Allen Lazard on injured reserve on Thursday with a chest injury. He will have to miss at least the team’s next four games.

The Jets have an incredible one-two punch with Adams and Garrett Wilson, but the loss of Lazard, combined with their win against the Houston Texans on Thursday night, could change things. This victory could cause the Jets to lose “seller” status and further encourage them not to want to part with their assets.

That could include Williams, who the team might need to play a bigger role without Lazard and given that stupid play by rookie Malachi Corley on Thursday night.

The Chargers might want to bring Williams back, but the Jets might not listen to offers.

If Mike Williams is unavailable, what does the WR trade market look like?

The Chargers may have to consider a more minor addition with all the big names already finding new teams or may simply not be for sale.

Darius Slayton of the New York Giants and KJ Osborn of the New England Patriots are a few options that could be available. Although it would require a much larger return, Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals is constantly connected to trade talks.

In a few days, fans will see if the team decides to make a move or if they have to approach the rest of the season with the receivers already on the roster.
