In a surprising move, Indonesia has banned the sale and use of Apple’s iPhone 16 within its borders. Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, the country’s industry minister, said that any iPhone 16 found in the hands of consumers will be considered illegal. He warned potential buyers against acquiring the device abroad, highlighting the seriousness of the ban. This announcement has left tourists in the lurch as they are now unsure what will happen to iPhone 16 owners who are already visiting Indonesia or those planning a visit soon.

According to Kartasasmita, the iPhone 16 does not have IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) certification for use in Indonesia. “If you are using an iPhone 16 in Indonesia, it means the device is illegal,” he said, urging the public to report any such cases.

Why Indonesia banned the Apple iPhone 16

The ban stems from Apple’s failure to meet its investment commitments in Indonesia. Reports indicate that the tech giant has invested around 1.48 trillion rupees (around $95 million) out of the promised 1.71 trillion rupees, resulting in a shortfall of around 230 billion rupees (14, 75 million dollars). Kartasasmita explained that the Ministry of Industry has not been able to issue permits for the iPhone 16 because Apple has not yet fulfilled its obligations.

Earlier this month, the minister had already indicated that the iPhone 16 could not be sold in the country due to the wait for TKDN certification, which requires that 40% of a product’s content come from sources local. This certification is crucial for Apple as it ties into the company’s commitment to establishing research and development facilities in Indonesia, known as Apple Academy.

The announcement follows a visit by Apple CEO Tim Cook to Jakarta in April, during which he discussed potential manufacturing projects with President Joko Widodo. Despite these discussions, the lack of satisfaction with local investment has led to the current restrictions.
