Orlando mayor sets curfew after Halloween shooting

Halloween festivities in Orlando took a tragic turn this year when a deadly shooting broke out in the city’s downtown, killing two people and injuring several others.

According to a report from Orlando.com, two people were killed and several others were injured following a mass shooting in the city’s downtown area, where Halloween celebrations were taking place. The chaos prompted Mayor Buddy Dyer to declare a state of emergency and announce a strict curfew in the downtown entertainment district, in an effort to curb the violence.

“I will declare a local state of emergency for establishments in the downtown entertainment area, which will end the sale of alcohol at midnight and implement a curfew from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.” , Dyer said at a press conference, visibly shaken. “We do not take this decision lightly and we took a number of steps before we came to this, following another tragic shooting downtown.” The Mayor confirmed that the curfew would remain in force until next Friday (November 8) in response to recent events.

Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith detailed the quick arrest of 17-year-old Jaylen Edgar, who now faces two counts of first-degree murder and six counts of attempted murder. Describing the scene, Smith recounted how officers were able to quickly apprehend Edgar as he attempted to flee. “We of course used the cameras to see that, to replay it. We had this capacity at major intersections,” he explained. “The officers reacted very quickly, they did an excellent job. They reacted as soon as they heard the shooting. You know, everyone’s running… They found the shooter. They shot him.

In the chaos, a total of seven people were injured, and an additional person was trampled in the frenzy to escape the gunfire. Another victim, who went to the hospital himself, was later reported in stable condition.
