Alleged stalker’s notebook discovered in Phoenix woman’s murder

PHOENIX (AZFamille) — New details have been uncovered in the murder of Doris Aguilar, 25, who was found dead in a car next to Juan Cuellar, the man her family says stalked her.

After obtaining Aguilar’s medical examiner’s report, Arizona’s family I learned exactly what was written in the most crucial piece of evidence: Cuellar’s notebook. But police say the truth is mixed with many lies.

On July 7, two bodies were found in a car outside a Longhorn Steakhouse restaurant in west Phoenix. Eventually, they were identified as Aguilar, who was shot in the head, and Juan Cuellar, lying next to her in the driver’s seat. Phoenix police said he killed himself after killing Aguilar.

In this car with them, a notebook.

“It took a little while to go through the notebook, which provides a whole different dynamic of what happened than perhaps what some of the evidence has shown,” said Phoenix Police Sergeant Rob Scherer .

Aguilar, a gym enthusiast, went missing in Phoenix on July 1. Her family launched a search for her with a private investigator. During the investigation, they feared that Cuellar was the cause of her disappearance.

His involvement and responsibility in her death turned out to be true, according to police.

In the notebook found in the car with them, Cuellar wrote this:

“She picked it up. She didn’t know the security was off. I went to get the gun and it went off. I panicked and left. I knew it would be my fault.

But Scherer said that story about how she was shot couldn’t be true.

“The gun itself doesn’t have a safety per se,” Scherer said. “So obviously this is something that is not truthful as far as what has been written.”

Cuellar wrote in his notebook that he rolled away in shock and changed her clothes so she wouldn’t be dirty. Many entries professed love and deep feelings for her as well as anger at the thought of seeing other men.

He wrote: “I couldn’t bear to be without her in my life.”

But Phoenix police have confirmed something about the nature of their connection, or lack thereof.

“I can tell you there was no element of a romantic relationship at the time of the homicide,” Scherer said.

Cuellar also wrote about how he and the victim shared a daughter.

“We have no information about a common child between the two,” Scherer said.

Ultimately, Cuellar committed suicide and both bodies were found days later. They were difficult to identify due to the condition of their remains.

One of the last entries in the notebook read:

“I hope she can forgive me. Please tell my family it was an accident.

Scherer said a key piece of that puzzle they’re still missing is where she was killed.

While Aguilar was missing, her phone briefly rang in Peoria, which was considered a possible crime scene.

“This information was never definitive and no scene was located,” Scherer said.

While Aguilar’s family and the private investigator believe Cuellar’s obsession with Aguilar and his desire for her when he couldn’t have her were the motivations, Phoenix police said they were still working on that.

“Their belief is the why. Our investigators are still trying to figure that out,” Scherer said.
