Various sectors of Taiwanese society commemorated the 79th anniversary of Taiwan’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule on Friday, calling for recognition of the one-China principle and to stop pushing the island to the brink of war.

More than 1,000 people in favor of reunification across the Taiwan Strait participated in a march in Taipei and submitted a joint statement to the Democratic Progressive Party authorities, calling for the day to be reinstated as a public holiday to make respect historical justice.

They said in their statement that Taiwan’s recovery was a hard-won achievement thanks to the bloodshed of all the Chinese people, and the legal status of the two sides belonging to one China could not be questioned.
