The toll of flash floods which devastated parts of the east and south Spain rose to 205 yesterday, according to the Coordinated and Integrated Operations Center of the Valencian Region.

Images recorded by a China Global Television Network (CGTN) Our correspondent in Valencia showed that residents of the disaster areas were either evacuating on foot or cleaning debris from their flooded homes.

Since Thursday, 50 additional deaths have been confirmed, bringing the total to 202 in the Valencia region.

Three other deaths were recorded in neighboring Castile-La Mancha and the southern region of Andalusia. Emergency services are continuing their search and rescue operations, and more deaths are expected to be confirmed in the coming hours.

The regional government of Valencia announced that the Valencia Conference Center would be used as a temporary morgue to accommodate the bodies of the victims.

Flash floods suddenly hit eastern and southern Spain overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning, bringing more than a year’s worth of rainfall to some areas in four to five hours.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles confirmed on Friday that another 500 members of the armed forces were being deployed to help in the affected regions.

These troops will join the 1,200 already deployed, with the help of 400 vehicles and 15 search and rescue helicopters.

Yesterday, electricity company Iberdrola confirmed that more than 23,000 homes remain without power, an improvement on the 130,000 homes initially affected by outages at the start of the disaster.

The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Development announced an emergency fund of more than 25 million euros (27.18 million US dollars) for immediate repairs on the most seriously affected roads.

Around half of this sum will be spent on repairing a viaduct on the A7 motorway, which partially collapsed during the floods, with significant damage also reported on the N-330 and N-322 motorways.

On Thursday, Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said the high-speed rail link between Madrid and Valencia would likely be out of service for around three weeks due to the collapse of two tunnels on the route.

Around 80 km of local railway lines were also destroyed by the floods.

It was confirmed yesterday that the MotoGP race scheduled for late November at the Cheste circuit, near Valencia, had been canceled due to extensive flood damage to the circuit and surrounding areas.

Additionally, all sporting events in the Valencia region, including the La Liga match between Valencia and Real Madrid, have been postponed as Spain observes three days of official mourning.
