Salaries are rising across the UK, but outside of London and surrounding counties they remain below the national average. In the UK, the average full-time employee earns £37,430 a year according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics, an increase of 6.9% from 2023.

In Merseyside, all five boroughs are below the national average in terms of income. In Liverpool, the average full-time salary is £34,611, which is well below the national average. In Knowsleyit’s even lower at £34,533, and in Saint Helenait’s even lower at £34,478. The only two boroughs in Merseyside close to the national average are Wirral And Sefton. Wirral’s average full-time salary is £36,355, while Sefton’s is slightly higher at £36,590.

People living in more than half (55%) of local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales earn less than the national average. The majority of areas earning an income above the national average are in and around London.

The North East (£33,343), Yorkshire and the Humber (£34,633), East Midlands (£34,862), Wales (£34,915), West Midlands (£35,000), North West (£35,298) and South West (£36,112). ) all earn less than the national average. Only the South East (£40,339), Scotland (£38,286), East (£39,065) and London (£44,780) earn more.


Only eight of the 68 local authorities in the north of England earn more than the national average. Only 18 out of 73 councils in the East and West Midlands earn an income above the national average, while in Wales it’s three out of 22 and in the South West it’s nine out of 29.

Pendle, Lancashire, has the lowest average incomes of any local authority in the country. The average full-time employee there earns £28,945 per year. Next are Blackburn with Darwen (£29,153), Boston (£29,503), Leicester (£29,839) and Nottingham (£29,983).


At the other end of the scale is the London borough of Richmond upon Thames. The average salary for full-time employees there is £56,048 per year. This is 17.7% higher than in 2023. St Albans has the second highest average at £53,829, followed by Kensington and Chelsea at £52,622, Westminster at £51,034 and Wandsworth at £50,490.
