Draymond Green Shares His Theory on Why Grant Williams Fouled Celtics’ Jayson Tatum

In a strange scene Friday evening, Charlotte Frelons forward Grant Williams, a friend and former teammate of Boston Celtics Celtics star Jayson Tatum slammed into Tatum, who was bringing the ball up the court after a defensive rebound, and knocked the Celtics star to the ground during Boston’s 124-209 victory at Spectrum Center.

Williams was rated Flagrant 2 and was kicked out of the match, even though there was just over two minutes left to play. After the match, Tatum’s teammate Jaylen Brown objected to Williams foulcomparing it to a tackle by Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, and even questioning Williams’ supposed friendship with Tatum. Williams told reporters the play “was definitely not intentional.”

But Warriors of the Golden State Forward Draymond Green, who faced and defeated Tatum, Williams and Brown in the 2022 NBA Finals, didn’t buy Williams’ explanation. The Warriors star took to X (formerly Twitter) after the Celtics-Charlotte game and called out Williams.

Afterwards, Green called Williams “awkward” for smiling during his postgame media availability with reporters.

But, in perhaps his most interesting tweet of the series of four he sent, he floated a theory about why Williams would do such a thing to Tatum, whom he called “one of my closest friends in the league.

“He’s mad at JT about something lol…” Green wrote. “He was supposed to keep it in Boston lol. JT got a ring and dude let his frustrations out about it.”

Basically, Green suggests that Williams, who was dealt to Dallas Mavericks in a July 2023 sign-and-trade, could harbor resentment toward Tatum, whose Boston team won a championship ring without Williams last season. There have been no reports that Tatum pressured — or didn’t pressure — the Celtics to keep Williams. And Green is just spitting here.

But it’s certainly an interesting theory.

Boston’s defending champion team improved to 5-1 with Friday’s win, while the Hornets dropped to 2-3.
