Juventus return to winning ways with 2-0 success at Udinese

:Juventus claimed a 2-0 victory at Udinese after a Maduka Okoye own goal and Nicolo Savona’s goal in Serie A on Saturday, as the visitors ended a three-game winless run all competitions combined.

After a defeat in the Champions League and two draws in the league, Juve remain undefeated in Serie A and have provisionally moved into third place with 21 points, tied with second-placed Inter and four behind leaders Napoli, both with a game in hand.

Thiago Motta’s side dominated from the start and took the lead in the 19th minute when Khephren Thuram’s shot hit the far post before bouncing off goalkeeper Okoye’s back and into his own net.

Savona doubled the lead when they took a loose ball after another rebound off the post following Kenan Yildiz’s shot in the 37th minute.

The hosts tried to push forward after the break but failed to pose much of a threat, with Lorenzo Lucca’s header hitting the bar late on as they closed in on goal.

The defeat leaves Udinese seventh with 16 points, three points off the European places.

“It’s a team victory, because we interpreted the match in the best way,” Juve coach Motta told DAZN. “In the first half we could have played a little more because Udinese allowed us to build from the back, the initial preparation.

“We circulated the ball and sometimes found very interesting situations, but we lacked a little depth at that moment, especially with our wingers.

“Udinese have a lot of confidence at the moment, we were good at compacting and playing.”

Juventus next play Lille in the Champions League on Tuesday before hosting rivals Turin in Saturday’s derby.

“Today we have to take advantage of this important victory for us and recover for the return of the Champions League on Tuesday,” Motta added.

“It will be very interesting to play against Lille. They have an extra day of recovery because they played yesterday, we will have to rest well to face this match well.”
