Worlds 2024 broke LoL record for most-watched esports event of all time

LoL Worlds 2023 broke records as the most-watched esports event of all time, reaching over 6.4 million viewers and beating all events that preceded it hands down. However, the 2024 Worlds pushed that record even further, somehow surpassing 2023’s incredible milestone.

After the progress of the 2022 Worlds, with DRX barely beats T1 and completing their miraculous journey to the finals, fans of LoL’s most iconic organization were hungry for a W. And, although the 2023 finals were disappointing considering T1’s one-sided victory, millions of people still watched see Faker get that fourth title.

Things were very different in 2024. BLG proved to be a much more worthy contender, with the team really putting T1 on the ropes. If this expansion hadn’t gone into a 5 game, there’s a good chance the old audience record would not have been broken. Fortunately, this is the case.

According to Esports Chartsthe 2024 World Cup final peaked at just under 7 million viewers, breaking last year’s record with more than 500,000 viewers.

This, in addition to an average audience of nearly 2 million viewers across the entire event, makes LoL Worlds 2024 the largest esports event of all time. Despite its age, League of Legends remains a premiere that people listen to in droves every year.

It’s also not like the entire audience is biased towards T1. For example, Gen.G’s match against FlyQuest in the quarterfinals attracted over 3 million viewers at its peak.

Meanwhile, the opening ceremony alone attracted 4.5 million viewers, also making it the most-watched opening ceremony of any esports event.

It remains to be seen whether League of Legends can maintain this momentum and continue to break viewership records year after year. While T1 sets all audience records for LoL internationals, in part because of how popular Faker isit’s hard to imagine this record being broken unless this list can start all over again in 2025.
