AJ Davis injury update: SMU CB taken off field by ambulance after scary collision vs. Pitt

SMU is in the midst of a dream debut season in the ACC, entering Saturday night’s game with Pittsburgh undefeated in conference play, but a concerning injury to CB AJ Davis has stopped the Mustangs in their tracks.

Davis went down in the final minutes of the second quarter and left the field in an ambulance, leading to a lengthy delay as medical personnel tended to the injured defensive back and the two teams gathered together.

SMU was leading 28-3 at the time of Davis’ injury, piling up the points against an undefeated Pitt team and looking like a team capable of competing for an ACC title in its first season as a power conference program. The Mustangs will have to play the rest of the game for their injured teammate.

Here are the latest updates on Davis’ condition following his horrific injury on Saturday.

AJ Davis injury update: Latest on SMU CB status

Davis appeared to suffer a head or neck injury on a kickoff return from Pitt’s Tyrique Robinson.

Davis was attempting to tackle or at least slow down Robinson when his head was clipped by Robinson’s chest. Robinson was able to continue running, but Davis immediately fell and was unable to get up.

Medical personnel stabilized Davis for several minutes before loading him into the vehicle, and several family members got out of the seats to check on him while he was stabilized.

Fortunately, the ACC Network show reported that Davis “made some movements” before being taken away by ambulance. SMU coach Rhett Lashlee had a positive take on Davis late in the first half, telling ACC Network, “He was moving everything, he was alert,” but adding that the cornerback had a sore neck .

Davis is a redshirt junior and a local product for SMU, as he is from Dallas. Davis appeared in seven games last season and had four tackles this season as a special player and reserve cornerback.
