Smashed pumpkins at a composting event at Hudson River Park

WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) — It’s that time of year when squashed pumpkins are a hit at Manhattan’s Hudson River Park.

Organizers urged everyone to bring their jack-o-lanterns and Halloween decorations. The pumpkins were then chopped into small pieces.

The event wasn’t just a workout, but it had a purpose. The pumpkin pieces will be composted and used in municipal parks.

As part of Hudson River Park’s community composting program, 71,000 pounds of compost have already been collected this year to support sustainability efforts throughout the park.
