Abuja motorists to soon adopt e-ticketing system for seamless traffic management – DRTS

The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) is set to unveil its electronic ticketing and central reservation system aimed at transforming traffic management for motorists in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The Director of DRTS, Mr. Abdulateef Bello, shared these insights in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Mr. Bello stressed that the implementation of this technological system aims to significantly reduce, if not completely eliminate, physical interactions between DRTS officers and motorists on the roads.

He declared“The question of whether car inspectors will fight against motorists will soon be a thing of the past, because we are working very hard to achieve this.”

DRTS said it has engaged several service providers specializing in electronic traffic management and penalty systems. “Some of these companies were engaged on a proof-of-concept basis by first installing their devices at strategic positions in the FCT before demonstrating their ability to interpret infractions to the sanctions administration,” Bello explained.

Steps towards implementation

The DRTS is currently navigating a regulatory framework that includes obtaining approval from the Abuja Investment Company and the Infrastructure Concessions Regulatory Commission (ICRC) before proceeding with formal procurement. Bello noted, “We need to allow the regulatory process to be followed, but all things being equal, some of these things should be up and running by the first quarter of next year.”

The electronic enforcement system aims to effectively combat vehicle-related offenses and improve safety on the roads in the FCT.

“The moment you commit an offense, our men on the road will simply issue you a ticket and you will receive alerts on your phone as long as that vehicle is registered with the FCT,” he said.

This system will allow motorists to continue their journey while receiving an alert detailing the offense and the corresponding fine.

Training of electronic ticketing staff

In light of recent challenges, including a court ruling barring DRTS officers from impounding faulty vehicles, the agency is also focusing on training its staff on the electronic ticketing system. Bello said: “Our operational staff are currently undergoing training on the electronic ticketing system while a few on the road are doing their best to coordinate traffic.”

  • He reiterated the continued use of the Abuja Inspector application, which enables DRTS personnel to ensure compliance with traffic rules.
  • He urged motorists to obey traffic laws, stressing the importance of registering and renewing vehicle documents and updating driving licenses. “The DRTS is working very hard to transform the way it operates to ensure that we provide efficient services that match the status of the FCT,” he noted.

Bello highlighted plans to transition to paperless administration of motor vehicles, which are expected to be included in next year’s budget. “We are also working very hard to move towards paperless motor vehicle management. » he said.
