“Should I get rid of it or do something?” »

A homeowner trying to add a pop of color to his garden encountered a problem with his flowers after discovering they were undesirable properties.

In the r/gardening subreddit, the group’s self-proclaimed “newbie” shared photos of their bright orange lilies in the garden, admitting “I just found out that our tiger lilies are actually just invasive daylilies.”

“I feel bad. Should I get rid of them or do something? They’re so pretty,” they added.

Although the owner did not specify their location, daylilies are considered invasive in many areas of the United States. According to the Potomac Conservatorydaylilies can spread quickly and form dense patches, smothering other flowers and plants. To get rid of them, they recommend digging up the plants, removing the tubers and throwing them in the trash, not the compost, as they can come back.

Replace invasive species with natives in the garden has many benefits, including attracting pollinators to help the ecosystem. Native species are also easier to maintain, save money on water and maintenance.

In the comments on the gardener’s post, they were reassured that although the daylily is technically invasivekeeping it under control is the most important.

“Invasive doesn’t mean eliminate. Invasive just means do your best to keep it under your thumb. I have several species of things that are invasive (lily of the valley, datura, etc.) but I keep them under control by removing all the unwanted species plants and cut off pods and keep really invasive plants in containers,” one person suggested.

Another pointed out that daylilies are considered “naturalized non-natives“, meaning they have been present in the United States for hundreds of years. “They are spread by gardeners themselves or via their rhizome root systems. So you should only delete them if you want to.” the Potomac Conservancy wrote.

Several people have also pointed out that daylilies are actually completely edibleSince flower with tuberswith a person describing them as “the sweetest lettuce you’ve ever eaten.”
