ALPENA, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) — A man died by suicide after fleeing on foot from a traffic stop in Alpena.

Saturday at 2:38 p.m., dispatchers alerted law enforcement “to be on the lookout for a reckless driver,” Alpena police said in a statement.

The vehicle was later found near McRae Park, and a traffic stop was attempted.

Police said the driver, a 47-year-old man, exited the vehicle and ran toward a residence.

Police said after a short time in the residence, the man exited the home and “ran a short distance before ultimately taking his own life.”

Police said an investigation into the incident was ongoing and the man’s identity had not yet been released, out of respect for his family.

The police department said Michigan State Police assisted officers during the incident.
