Street race in Islip ends in crash, police say – NBC New York

Illegal street racers stepped on the gas when police came to break up their event on Long Island overnight, but authorities said several of the drivers had to run on foot after crashing their vehicles.

Islip firefighters were dispatched around 2 a.m. Sunday to reports of fires during a run on Commack Road at the Sunrise Highway overpass, the department said.

Fire trucks were initially able to reach the scene because illegal road closures were allegedly in place. The police managed to get through and tried to stop the race, forcing the drivers to flee.

But several of them, Islip authorities say, didn’t get very far.

Two of the fleeing cars apparently collided near Commack Road and Grant Avenue, where they struck a telephone pole. The accident caused one of the cars to catch fire. The people in that car reportedly jumped out and fled on foot.

A local hazardous materials team had to respond to the accident due to a “significant oil leak.”

Two other accidents were reported. Fire officials said one occurred at West Pine Street and Whitman Avenue, where another car hit a telephone pole. Once again, the occupants of this car got out and fled on foot.

No arrests have been reported.
