Fatal tanker crash shuts down north side of 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (CNS) — One person was killed and two others injured when a fuel truck overturned on northbound Harbor (110) Freeway at Manchester Boulevard, spilling between 500 and 1,000 gallons of aviation fuel onto the roadway, the Los Angeles Fire Department announced Sunday.

The crash was reported at 10:55 p.m. Saturday and responding personnel found one person dead under the tanker truck, LAFD spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said.

The driver of the tanker truck was reportedly transported to the hospital in a private vehicle and had no contact with LAFD responders, she added. A woman in her thirties was slightly injured and transported by emergency services to a hospital.

Firefighters used a redwood plug to plug a leak in the tanker, where about 8,000 gallons of aviation fuel remained, Stewart said.

Both sides of the 110 Freeway near Manchester Boulevard in South Los Angeles are closed following a fatal fuel truck crash overnight.

LAFD crews helped Caltrans lay down an sorbent to contain the fuel hazard, authorities said.

Firefighters drilled four holes in the tanker truck to allow access for the fuel unloading operation, which was conducted by the trucking company owner.

Private wreckers were on site to right the tanker trailer and prepare it for removal. Firefighters will extricate the victim and assist the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office in recovering the body.

The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert at 11:10 p.m. Saturday, closing the northbound and southbound lanes of the Harbor Freeway (110) at Manchester Boulevard. The closure of the southbound lanes ended at 7 a.m. and the closure of the northbound lanes ended at 12:20 p.m., according to the CHP.
