Joseph Suaalii loan deal, Roosters negotiate with Rugby Australia, Waratahs, contract option, news, videos, highlights

The Roosters and Rugby Australia have reportedly held shock discussions over a possible loan deal for Joseph Suaalii to return to the NRL in 2026.

According to the SMH, Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh spoke to Tricolors management last month.

RA is reportedly considering loaning the 21-year-old to the Roosters in 2026, between the 2015 British and Irish Lions tour and the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

Suaalii is under contract with RA through the end of the 2027 tournament, but he also reportedly has a two-year, $4 million option in his favor for the 2028 and 2029 seasons.

According to Waugh, he considered the idea after being approached by Roosters officials, but the move did not progress beyond preliminary discussions.

Any potential deal would have seen the Tricolors take part in Suaalii’s five-year, $8.5 million mega contract for the time he spends away from the 15-man code.

However, the Roosters reportedly made their decision after discovering Suaalii’s two-year option.

His contract with the Tricolors is said to be worth around $800,000 per season, and the club is reportedly unwilling to make a deal higher than that figure to entice him to return.

Suaalii could still spend time away from Rugby Australia with an overseas franchise, potentially playing the 15-man code in France or Japan.

The Roosters are believed to be confident Suaalii will take the option in his favor, meaning he won’t be available to play in the NRL until at least 2030.

As the war between the codes continued, Waugh was convinced the two sports needed to maintain a relationship.

“We have to coexist with rugby league,” he said.

“I’m less concerned about girls or boys playing league and AFL – as long as they get to experience rugby.

“You’re not going to put me head to head with the Roosters and I think we can co-exist successfully and we’ve done that since the beginning of rugby league.”
