Russia sends nearly 100 drones to Ukraine, as Zelensky calls for tougher sanctions against Moscow

kyiv, Ukraine — Moscow sent 96 drones and an aerial guided missile to Ukraine overnight Sunday, Ukrainian officials said.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 66 drones were destroyed during the night barrage, along with the missile.

Another 27 drones were “lost” over various areas, it said, likely after being electronically jammed, while one drone flew over Belarusian airspace. No casualties have been reported.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Russia had launched around 900 guided aerial bombs, 500 drones and 30 missiles against Ukraine over the past week.

Zelensky on Sunday called on Ukraine’s allies to provide “long-range capabilities for our security,” saying these “attacks would have been impossible if we had sufficient support from the world.”

Kyiv is still waiting for news from its Western partners on its repeated requests to use the long-range weapons they provide to hit targets on Russian soil, notably for Ukrainian pre-emptive strikes against camps where North Korean troops are trained.

The Ukrainian president also urged his partners to adopt “truly effective sanctions to prevent Russia from importing components essential for the production of drones and missiles.”

The call followed a speech on Saturday in which he said more than 2,000 drones and missiles “always using Western components” had been launched against Ukraine in October, and stressed the need for stricter export controls to prevent any evasion of sanctions.

In Russia, the Defense Ministry said 19 Ukrainian drones were shot down overnight on Sunday in three regions of Russia: 16 in the Rostov region, two in the Belgorod region and one in the Volgograd region.

A man died in a Ukrainian drone attack in the Belgorod region on Sunday, according to regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov.
