Severe thunderstorms hit KZN causing damage, SA concerned

PIETERMARITZBURG, KWAZULU-NATAL — Heavy rain and thunderstorms, warned by the South African Weather Service, would hit KwaZulu-Natal and damage infrastructure.

A school and a hospital affected by the rains

According to SABC NewsSAWS has published a level 4 yellow warning for certain parts of the province and Eastern Cape. The province is expected to experience violent thunderstorms accompanied by heavy precipitation. SAWS also warned that extreme weather conditions would cause travel disruptions, affect informal settlements and damage infrastructure.

The roof of the Ashdown Primary administration building School was blown away, causing flooding. Sections of Edendale Hospital were also affected by heavy rain.

South Africans worried

Internet users on Facebook were concerned about the fate of residents in the area affected by the heavy rains.

“We will keep them in our prayers. Let’s stop littering and respect our soil and nature to avoid this. As I speak to you, hail has destroyed the windows of my house.”

Soweto flooded during heavy rains

Gauteng experienced heavy rains in October 2024 and many roads in Soweto were flooded. Residents blamed poor maintenance of the drainage system and residents littering the drainage systems.
