ChatGPT-5 won’t arrive in 2025, but superintelligence is achievable today, says Sam Altman – Firstpost

Even though ChatGPT-5 won’t be dropped next year, OpenAI has big plans in store. From more interactive AI features to the transition to AGI, the company is definitely preparing for major changes.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently shared what’s on the horizon for ChatGPT and the company’s broader AI plans in a Reddit AMA. For anyone hoping to see a ChatGPT-5 in 2025, Altman’s message was clear: it won’t happen. He was quick to quash those rumors, calling reports of an imminent release “fake news.”

But don’t worry, OpenAI isn’t slowing down. Altman said he is working on some exciting updates planned for later this year. So while the name “GPT-5” isn’t planned, there’s certainly more to look forward to.

Big moves and new features
2024 has already been busy for OpenAI. They rolled out advanced voice mode for ChatGPT to desktop apps and introduced a new search feature that gives Google a run for its money. Altman seems pretty excited about how ChatGPT’s search compares to traditional search engines, pointing out that it’s a faster, more user-friendly way to find information, especially for complex queries.

He even hinted at a future in which search results could automatically create personalized web pages on the fly. That seems like a game changer, right?

When asked about the next steps for Dall-E 3, the image generator that is part of ChatGPT, Altman was a little vague. He promised the sequel would be worth it, but didn’t have a specific timeline to share. So it looks like visual updates are on the back burner for now.

What’s next? Autonomous AI
One of the hot topics that was discussed was autonomous AI – programs that can do more than just respond to commands, but can actually accomplish tasks on their own. Altman hinted that 2025 would be all of this, signaling that OpenAI is heading in that direction.

He suggested that “agents” – AI robots capable of acting independently – are the next big thing. This is a trend we’re seeing across the board, with competitors like Google embarking on similar projects like Jarvis AI.

Aim for true intelligence
Perhaps the most jaw-dropping moment was when Altman talked about AGI, or artificial general intelligence. Think of it as the Holy Grail of AI: a system that can think and reason like a human, maybe even better. Altman has previously mentioned that AGI could be here in “a few thousand days,” and in this AMA he doubled down, saying he thinks it’s achievable with the technology we have today. This is pretty crazy, considering that AGI has often seemed like a distant science fiction concept.

So even though ChatGPT-5 won’t be dropped next year, OpenAI has big plans in store. From more interactive AI features to the transition to AGI, the company is definitely preparing for major changes. The next chapter of AI promises to be exciting – and OpenAI looks set to lead the charge.
