Two drivers are suspected of negligent homicide after an 11-year-old boy was struck yesterday afternoon while cycling through a pedestrian crossing in Taichung’s Beitun District (北屯), it was announced today. now the fifth district of the Taichung Police Department.

At 3:46 p.m. yesterday, there was an accident involving a bicycle, a scooter and a car at the intersection of Dunhua Road Sec 2 and Renping Road, the police station said.

An 11-year-old boy, surnamed Huang (黃), was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk next to Dunhua Road Sec 2 and stopped briefly when he arrived at the intersection of Renping Road before crossing the pedestrian crossing to reach the park on the street. on the other side, police said.

While crossing the road, he was first hit by Tang (湯), 29, who was riding an electric scooter on the other side of the intersection, causing him to fall off his bike and land in the inside lane, although he remained in the pedestrian crossing. , they said.

He was then struck by Fu (傅), 32, driving a sport utility vehicle, also coming from the other side of the intersection, police said.

The boy was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, but succumbed to the multiple injuries he suffered in the accident, they said.

Neither Tang nor Fu were injured and both tested negative on a breathalyzer, they added.

The accident occurred at a T-intersection where traffic lights operate from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and flashing red and yellow lights at other times, the department said.

At the time of the accident, traffic on Dunhua Road Sec 2 had a flashing yellow light and traffic on Renping Road had a flashing red light, he said.

The police department said it plans to work with other departments to improve traffic safety measures in response to the crash.

Although the exact cause of the accident remains to be determined, Tang and Fu were both referred to the Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office on suspicion of negligent homicide after questioning, police said.
