This Quick Share change could fix its annoying dialog issue (APK teardown)

Quick share on Pixel 8 Pro

TL;DR

  • As discovered during an APK teardown, Google might be changing the functionality of the Quick Share tile.
  • This new feature bypasses several current dialog boxes and sheets to make sharing files with others faster and easier.

Google has constantly improved its Quick share feature since it merged with Samsung’s similar offering earlier this year. After revealing some of its new tricks, including the return of some Nearby Share features, another quality of life addition could soon affect its Quick Settings tile.

A Teardown of the APK helps predict features that might come to a service in the future based on current work code. However, these planned features may not be available in a public release.

Digging deeper into Google Play Services beta v22.44.31, we spotted a subtle but important change in the functionality of the Quick Share tile on Android devices. Currently, when tapping the tile, users encounter several dialog boxes prompting them to turn Bluetooth on (if it’s turned off) and another sheet that allows them to adjust their visibility settings.

However, the new feature takes users directly to a “Ready to Receive” dialog box. This dialog box allows users to select the files they want to send immediately, thus starting the sharing process much earlier than before. Notably, the same dialog box appears when by tapping on the Receive button in the Files by Google app. THE Select the files to send The button, when pressed, also opens our default Android file picker.

It’s a small change, but this new feature has clear benefits. It speeds up the sharing process by automatically opening the device’s visibility to everyone nearby. Tapping the tile also automatically turns Bluetooth on, while closing this new sheet automatically turns it off.

It’s important to note that there are security implications, as your device will be visible to everyone within range during this process. Still, the new feature should put the “Quick” back in Quick Share and eliminate the hassle of going through multiple dialog boxes to send a file to another user.
