Survey Shows Unlimited Photo Backups Remain a Top Priority for Android Users

The original Pixel series offered unlimited backups for photos and videos, a feature particularly appreciated by users like my colleague Hadlee Simons, who recently wrote about how he appreciated the ability to take photos from his Pixel 4 without worrying about storage limitations. Much to everyone’s disappointment, Google removed this advantage with the Pixel 6 in 2021.

While recent Pixels focus on advanced camera capabilities and AI features, the lack of an unlimited backup option has left many users with demanding features like Video boost.

So we asked our readers if they would buy a phone that offers free unlimited photo backup. 82% of those surveyed expressed their willingness to purchase such a device in Android Authority investigation. Only 15% of respondents indicated that their decision would depend on the specific phone model and its price, while only 3% were not at all interested, citing that existing cloud storage solutions are sufficient for their backup needs of photos.

One reader commented on our survey saying, “I’d happily trade free Pixel VPN access for free Photos storage.” »

“Google Photos really needs a paid option for unlimited storage,” said another.

One reader even suggested: “How about offering users the benefit of a year of unlimited Storage Saver backups with the purchase of a new Pixel.” Then allow them to *purchase* an additional year of unlimited storage backups for an additional fee of around $20. Both of these options would back up storage photos that are not counted in storage. Google gets Pixel sales and revenue, customers have the option to pay for a year of Google photo backups with unlimited storage saver. A victory for both Google and consumers. And it’s better than having to watch storage fill up.

“I was hoping Google would be the non-Apple value offering without overcharging for everything. But Google seems happy to be the alternative to Apple, following in their footsteps. If Google insisted on offering better value for money by bringing back unlimited photo storage, it would give it a big advantage in the market. Imagine if they included headphones and a charging stand like the original iPhone. These companies need to stop charging too much. Everyone needs to boycott these companies until they get their act together,” another reader said.

In summary, the results of the survey – which has received more than 10,000 votes so far – suggest a significant market opportunity for manufacturers like Google to return to its roots of offering free photo backups and unlimited. This should also be a signal to other Android brands that can offer this feature as a competitive advantage.
