Early voting in Michigan ends with more than 1.2 million people voting

(WXYZ) — More than 1.2 million Michigan residents have voted early for the 2024 general election, according to the state voter dashboard.

As of Sunday, 189,442 people voted, according to the dashboard. That’s the highest daily total in the state. The previous record was reached the day before with 145,955 people having voted.

After voters passed a series of voting rights changes in Michigan in 2022, the state allowed in-person early voting. Michigan communities were required to allow at least nine days of early voting, at least eight hours per day, beginning the second Saturday before an election and ending the Sunday before.

A total of 1,214,444 people voted early in Michigan for the 2024 general election.

Last week, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson held a news conference after the first weekend, calling early voting a “huge success” and thanking poll workers.

In Michigan’s 2024 presidential primary, about 79,000 people voted early, and in the August primary, that number was about 73,000.

According to the SOS, 2,405,428 people requested postal voting. Of these, 1,981,594 have been returned.

State figures show 3,196,038 people voted absentee or early, representing about 44% of active participation among registered voters.

People who are not registered to vote but can still register in person at their clerk’s office up until Election Day and vote.

Those who have an absentee ballot but have not yet returned it are asked to return it in person to their local clerk’s office or to an official drop box in their jurisdiction.
