When is the NFL trade deadline? Date, main targets, deals closed so far

The most important day of 2024 in the United States is almost here: the NFL trade deadline.

After spending months building their rosters for 2024, teams around the league are beginning to determine whether their plans will succeed or fail by the end of the season. That’s where the deadline comes in: a last-ditch effort to put a contending team at the top, help a tanking team slide to the bottom, or determine how a club will move forward.

In many ways, the deadline is when teams determine who they will be for the rest of this season and beyond. While the trade deadline in the NFL usually doesn’t live up to the hype it generates in some other leagues, there’s always a chance for some fireworks before the dust settles.

Here’s when you can expect to see trading stop in 2024 and who might be sitting in another team’s seat when the music stops.

When is the NFL trade deadline?

  • Date: Tuesday November 5
  • Time: 4 p.m. ET

Phone lines are close to all potential trades at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, November 5. From that point on, teams will be stuck with the roster they built from that point on.

While signings can still take place, no players will change jerseys via trade until March at the earliest. The new championship year is scheduled to begin on March 12 at 4 p.m. ET, when the trade winds can start blowing again.

NFL Trade Deadline Candidates

The biggest names in the market have already found new accommodations, but many players could still book flights and hotel rooms by Tuesday afternoon. Most of the remaining names are closer to depth pieces than true stars. However, a blockbuster deal cannot be ruled out. Sometimes business deadlines can hold surprises. While we wait to see what reinforcements arrive, here are some of the notable players who could be available.
