The Indian cricket team has made its path to the final of the World Test Championship cycle (2023-25) much more difficult since its whitewash against New Zealand at home. Considering that they need to win four Tests and draw the remaining five matches which would be against the mighty Australians Down Under, Gavaskar feels that the current team might not be able to achieve that, thus posing a risk of qualification for the final. .

The former Indian cricketer doesn’t think the current team can go 4-0 up against Australia. He gave an honest opinion in which he believes that it might be possible for the Indian team to win at most three Tests, but winning four might be too big a task.

No, actually, no. India can’t beat Australia 4-0 in the Test series, I would be over the moon if they did,” Gavaskar replied to a question on India’s chances of winning four Tests against the Australia, cited by India today.

But Gavaskar doesn’t want the talk to be about the WTC final but rather ensure the focus is on the upcoming series against the Australians, whatever the result.

“Don’t talk about the World Test Championship final. Now just focus on winning the series in Australia,” he commented.

The legendary Indian opener wants the Rohit Sharma-led team to focus on winning the series and not get distracted by the WTC qualifying scenarios. He feels that

“It doesn’t matter if you win 1-0,2-0,3-0, 3-1,2-1. But go out there and win. Because that’s how all of us Indian cricket fans will feel good again,” he added.

The Indian team will look to redeem themselves in the Australian Test series as they hope to defend the Border-Gavaskar title once again. However, Australia will be keen to spoil the party once again in the hope of inflicting serious damage on India.

The Test series against Australia begins on November 22 at Optus Stadium in Perth.
