Prepare your car and car seat for winter

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – It’s November and even colder days are ahead, so it’s time to prepare your car and child car seat for winter.

The Grand Chute Fire Department reminds everyone to have an emergency kit in your vehicle. These are things you need to make sure of in case you get stranded or involved in an accident.

  • First aid supplies
  • Bottled water
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Jumper Cables and Basic Tools
  • Mobile phone and car charger
  • Blanket and warm clothing
  • Ice scraper
  • Small shovel
  • Sand for traction

And for parents, Winnebago County Public Health reminds you to secure your child in their car seat when wearing a winter coat.

The play created by thick clothing under the harness or seat belt is dangerous because it allows too much movement.

It is safer for your child to wear an alternative to down jackets in the car, such as fitted fleece jackets, a poncho over the harness, or wearing the coat inside out.

Winnebago County Public Health has an excellent resource for parents at (920) 232-3000. Staff can answer questions about car seat safety.

In the Green Bay area, the Center for Childhood Safety is an excellent resource, including a child car seat section on its website.
