EASTERN CAPE — South Africans were in uproar after suspected food poisoning claimed the life of another child in the Eastern Cape province.

Six students from Luzuko Primary School in Qonce were hospitalized on October 31, 2024 after eating snacks purchased from a Spaza store. They were rushed to a local clinic before being transferred to a nearby hospital. A Grade 4 student at Ngqika Primary School died the same day after also eating snacks purchased from Spaza stores.

The Buffalo City Metropolitan announced its closure in 2000 non-compliant spaza stores in the neighborhood. The provincial ministry of Education warned community members to watch what their children buy and eat.

A 9-year-old girl dies in Alexandra

In a related article, In brief News reported that a nine-year-old girl has died to Alexandra after eating snacks at a store.

Her death sparked community tension after community members vandalized the retail store where she allegedly purchased the snacks.
