British city’s eco-warriors blame SUVs for Spain floods | United Kingdom | News

Eco-warriors allegedly attacked 16 SUVs in Edinburgh in response to devastating floods Spain.

Activists from a group calling themselves The Tire Extinguishers said “outraged” residents took action overnight in Edinburgh to try to highlight the role of SUVs in creating “catastrophic” weather conditions.

The action came after more than 200 people died in floods in Valence. The search continued Monday, November 4, searching for bodies inside homes, garages and thousands of vehicles strewn across city streets.

Protesters targeted SUV in the Scottish capital New Town, leaving images of Valencia flood victims on windshields and deflated tires.

One of the photos showed a car daubed with the words “These cars are killing Valencians,” while another said “These cars are killing children.” Another shows a hooded activist deflating a tire.

In a message posted on social media, the group promised not to stop until “these machines of death” have left the roads.

Priya, a tire extinguisher in Edinburgh, said: “We hit 16 cars last night, with more expected. We’re calling on all tire extinguisher groups around the world – in all 22 countries in which we now have groups – to act now to highlight the link between climate death and luxury SUV emissions.

“We are not doing enough to emphasize that disasters like the one in Valencia have human causes. This is not a “natural” disaster, it is a disaster fueled by the fact that our governments are enslaved by fossil fuel and automobile lobbies.

“We need urgent action now to end SUV emissions, and if governments don’t do it, then it’s up to citizens to do it for them.

“If we cannot stop such obvious and extravagant forms of world destruction, so blatantly harmful and so pure vanity, then what is the point of pretending that we are in crisis? We owe it to the people of Valencia and to our children.”

The group cited a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which said that if SUVs were a country, they would be the world’s fifth largest emitter of CO2.

According to the IEA, SUVs accounted for 48% of global car sales in 2023. It said: “SUVs weigh 200 to 300 kg more than an average mid-size car and typically take up almost 0.3 m2 more of space, or around 20% more emissions. carbon dioxide emissions.

Storms in eastern Spain caused massive flooding last week, killing at least 217 people, mainly near Valencia. More rain fell in Barcelona on Monday, prompting authorities to suspend train services.

Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said authorities still could not give a reliable estimate of the number of people missing in Valencia.

Many people feel abandoned by the authorities, and anger erupted on Sunday November 3 when a crowd threw mud at King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spainthe Prime Minister and regional leaders during their first visit to Paiporta, where more than 60 people died.

Spain is used to autumn storms that can cause flooding, but the latest ones caused the deadliest floods in living memory for Spaniards.

Climatologists and meteorologists said the immediate cause of the flooding was a severed low-pressure storm system, which migrated from an unusually wavy and blocked jet stream.

It was probably fueled by a record temperature Mediterranean Sea. The low-pressure storm system stationed itself over the region and unleashed a devastating deluge.
