With Election Day in just one day, millions of Americans are preparing to head to the polls and vote.

However, as Election Day progresses, excitement will quickly turn away from voting and toward the anticipation of knowing who the country’s next president will be.

Although the wait is usually not very long, there are many factors related to this year’s presidential race that could delay the results. Just as the country saw in the close 2020 elections, which took four days to decide, the tight race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris could turn Election Day 2024 into another election week.

When will the results of the presidential election be known?

Simply put, no one knows. There is no specific timetable for when the presidential elections will be called.

The result of the presidential election is announced after all the ballots have been counted, which has taken between a day and a week in the past.

Generally, the closer the race, the longer it takes to find out the results. If the votes are as close as polls currently predictit could take several days before the result is known.

Why are election results delayed?

While polls close at 8 p.m. in Massachusetts, voting remains open until midnight EST in other states, and even later if polling places have long lines. waiting at closing time.

This year, several Key States expected to cause delays:

How long does it take for a candidate to concede the presidential race?

Once the votes are counted, the concession is most of the time quick. In 1896, William Jennings Bryant needed two days before conceding the election to President William McKinley. Since then, most candidates have conceded the same day or the next day. The two exceptions were in 2000 and 2020.

2000 presidential election

In the 2000 presidential race between Vice President Al Gore and Texas Governor George W. Bush, all eyes were on Florida and its 25 electoral votes. Florida has had voting problems with suspended children and allegations of misconduct. The case went to the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Bush. In total, it took 36 days before Gore conceded the election.

2020 presidential election

In 2020, former Vice President Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump, but it took four days for a winner to be declared. Trump posted “He Won” on social media referring to Biden on November 15, 2020, and said he would not serve another term on January 7, 2021 – a day after a riot at the Capitol. Trump never conceded the election.
