Chinese smartphone giant Oppo and PolyU to launch joint AI research center in Hong Kong

Oppo last Friday pledged no less than 30 million yuan ($4.2 million) in funding over the next five years to deepen collaborative efforts with PolyU on AI imaging technology, as well as to expand the co-training scale for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

“The main goal of the research center is to (nurture) talents,” Zhang Lei, chair professor of computer vision and image analysis at PolyU’s Department of Computer Science, South Korea, said recently. China Morning Post.

The new center – from a joint innovation lab established two years ago – is expected to be operational by January next year. It aims to recruit around 25 doctoral students and several postdoctoral researchers over a period of five years.

Their focus will be on computer vision, an area Zhang has been involved in for the past two decades, and will expand to broader research in the area of ​​computer vision. Generative AI (GenAI).

GenAI refers to algorithms, such as ChatGPT, that can be used to create new content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, and videos.
