Cold front from San Antonio TONIGHT with risk of severe thunderstorms

SAN ANTONIO – As the week starts off hot and humid, our next cold front is on the way with some relief and also a chance of thunderstorms in our area.

We will start very mild today, wet and windy with another round of sprinkles, mist or light rain in places. This will be enough to create damp morning streets, a few puddles. In the afternoon, skies become partly sunny with temperatures reaching the 80s, even around 90 in some places.

Tonight we will see the cold front slowly move into the area, arriving westward after sunset, then moving into the San Antonio area between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. While we might see a few showers or even an isolated thunderstorm develop before the front arrives, the main area of rain with thunder will develop as the front arrives.

There will be enough instability in the atmosphere to fuel storm updrafts and just enough wind shear to accompany the instability and strengthen some storms. The Level 1 of 5 “Marginal” severe storm forecasts overlap in our region and may expand in the next update to include a few additional counties in our region. The main dangers will be strong gusts and hail during strong to severe storms.

In terms of precipitation, general precipitation of 0.50″ to 1.50″+ is possible where the line of rain and storms develops then moves east. Areas west of this zone will unfortunately see much less.

Temperatures will drop slightly behind the front, but the air behind this cold front is cool Pacific air, not polar. This will just bring temperatures back closer to average to the mid 70s with a nice drop in humidity levels for a few days before our next chance of rain arrives late in the week with increased humidity.

After isolated showers and thunderstorms moved east on Tuesday morning, good weather prevails until Wednesday. Risks of isolated showers and thunderstorms develop from Thursday to Friday, then good weather returns for the weekend. Temperatures remain above average.
