Couple found dead in their car amid floods in Spain as death toll passes 200

Missing British couple found dead in their car in the middle of the devastating floods across Spain.

According to the BBCDon, 78, and Terri Turner, 74, were last seen in Pedralba on Tuesday, October 29, before torrential rain made landfall in Valencia, Spain, and continued through Wednesday. The guardian And The Independent also reported that the couple was found dead.

They were found on Saturday, November 2, after telling their neighbors they were going out to fill up their gas tank. Their daughter, Ruth O’Loughlin, hoped her parents could stay safe in these conditions.

“We were hoping they were still alive and maybe they could shelter somewhere,” she told the BBC. “We talked about mom and dad coming here next year to spend time with us and we just ended the call and I’m really glad I said ‘I love you’ and she said that she loves me too.”

His sister, Renee Turner, spoke to their father on Monday, October 28, and hoped to have an answer the next day. “Sometimes it’s not unusual, we can go a day or two without sending messages every five minutes,” she told the BBC.

Reuters and the BBC reported that a year’s worth of rain hit the ground in eight hours, causing the deadliest flood Spain has seen in three decades. Rainfall affected southern and eastern Spain, from Malaga to Valencia, according to the Associated Press.

Spanish authorities found 217 bodies on Monday, November 4, reports the Associated Press. Rainwater overflowed the basins of the Magro and Turia rivers and the bed of the Poyo river, AP reports, causing the banks to overflow.

Water washed away roads and railroad tracks, flooding homes and businesses, leaving people standing on the roofs of cars or seeking higher ground in buildings.

“We are facing a very difficult situation,” said the Spanish Minister of Territorial Policies, Ángel Víctor Torres, via PBS. “The fact that we cannot give the number of missing people shows the scale of the tragedy.”
