Deseret News’ plan for election night coverage – Deseret News

Polls will close Tuesday after Americans decide who they want to represent them in local, state and federal offices. The Deseret News will keep readers informed on what’s happening with the tight presidential race, control of the U.S. Senate and House and the Utah elections.

Polls close at 8 p.m. in Utah.

This year’s Deseret News coverage will include on-the-ground reports, live blogs and interactive maps showing updated results as The Associated Press calls races across the country. Deseret News Editor Doug Wilks and Managing Editor Sarah Weaver, along with other senior editors, will decide when Deseret News publishes stories claiming elections were called in these races.

You’ll be able to find important stories about state and national election results on the homepage, but there are other interactive pages you can visit to dig deeper.

National election coverage

On election night, the Deseret News online home page will display a bar at the top of the page showing the number of Electoral College votes that former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris blocked as States are called for one or the other candidate.

Our presidential election reporter, Samuel Benson, will be at Howard University in Washington, DC, where the Harris campaign is holding its election night party. Deseret News reporter Dennis Romboy will be in Florida, where the Trump campaign is holding its party at the Palm Beach County Convention Center.

Benson and Romboy will report on the mood of each campaign party as the night progresses.

On a page dedicated to national election results, you will see three maps: one map for the US presidential election and one map each for the US Senate and one map for the US House of Representatives.

The US presidential election map will be updated as states are called. If you hover over a state, you will be able to see information such as the number of votes counted and the total percentage. A bar displaying the Electoral College votes will also be visible above this map.

The U.S. Senate and House of Representatives maps will be similar – showing which way results are trending in the states. Each of these maps will also have a bar above displaying real-time results for Senate and House races.

Journalists from the Deseret News bureaus will live blog about the presidential election, as well as reporting on the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. As soon as polls close on the East Coast, you’ll be able to see the latest national election news, with a focus on swing states that could very well decide who the next president will be.

The state election results page will also be where you can find other articles written by Deseret News journalists throughout the night.

Utah election coverage

If you’re looking for the latest Utah election results, the Deseret News will also have a page dedicated to those returns.

This page will show results from the gubernatorial and Senate elections, as well as a tracker to show you state Senate and House races as well. There will be a drop-down box where you can select your district and see what the results are.

The Deseret News will provide separate coverage on many of the races you will see on this dedicated page and on the home page. Reporters Brigham Tomco, Hanna Seariac and Lisa Riley Roche will be on the ground during election nights for federal and state candidates. There will also be coverage of public school elections as well as reactions to the presidential election results from the Utah Republican Party and Utah Democratic Party watchdog parties.

Photojournalists will capture key moments throughout Election Day in Utah.

What does it mean to call an election?

The Associated Press has a whole team of people who analyze election results to determine which candidate will win an election. This is what the term “trigger an election” means.

If the late candidate has no path to victory, that’s when The associated press calls a race.

This means readers will likely know the results of several elections on election night. But other elections, potentially including the presidential election, could take a little longer to be called.
