When do polls close in each state? 2024 Election Day Timeline

The 2024 general election is here and states will soon begin counting votes. Election results will not be communicated by each state until their polling stations close, so as not to influence citizens’ decisions.

If you’re planning to vote in person on November 5, or are just curious about when election results might start coming in, here are the voting times for each state, including when polls open and close .

Alabama

Alabama is covered by the Eastern and Central time zones. Polling stations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time on Election Day.

Alaska

Alaska is the state with the most recent poll closures compared to the rest of the country. Polling stations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time.

Since Alaska is in both the Alaska Time Zone and the Hawaiian-Aleutian Time Zone, the last polling location closings will be at 1 a.m. Eastern Time .

Arizona

Polls in Arizona, a potentially swing state, will be open on Election Day from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time or 9 p.m. Eastern time.

Arkansas

Voting opens at 7:30 a.m. Central Time and closes at 7:30 p.m.

California

A state with the highest number of electoral votes, California’s polls will be open on Election Day from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. PT, meaning that on the East Coast, votes won’t be reported until after 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time).

Colorado

Polls in Colorado will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. MT.

Connecticut

Election Day hours in Connecticut are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

Delaware

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Election Day in Delaware.

District of Columbia

Voters in Washington, DC will be able to cast their ballots on Election Day between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

Florida

Florida, which has trended Republican in recent elections, is one of the Electoral College’s biggest prizes. Polling locations will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time on Election Day.

Georgia

Just like in 2020, Georgia is considered one of the closest swing states in the country. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time on Election Day.

Hawaii

In Hawaii, polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. local time, meaning that on the East Coast, returns won’t be reported until after midnight.

Idaho

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time in Idaho, another state covered by two time zones, Mountain and Pacific.

Illinois

Polls in Illinois, a state with a large number of electoral votes, will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central Time.

Indiana

Indiana was among the states where polls closed the earliest on election night. Polls will be open in the Hoosier State from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time. While most of Indiana is in the Eastern Time Zone, some parts of the state are on Central Time.

Iowa

Iowa polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. centrally.

Kansas

Polls in Kansas will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Kentucky

Like border state Indiana, polling stations are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time in Kentucky. About half of the state is in the Eastern Time Zone, while the other half is in the Central Time Zone.

Louisiana

Polls in Louisiana will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central Time on Election Day.

Maine

In Maine, where Electoral College votes are distributed by House districts, polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern, but in municipalities with fewer than 100 residents, polling stations will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. Polling stations will be closed once each registered voter has voted.

Maryland

Polls in Maryland will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Eastern on Election Day.

Massachusetts

Although municipalities can choose to open polls as early as 5:45 a.m. Eastern Time, polls in Massachusetts must be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Michigan

A state that helped swing the 2016 and 2020 elections, Michigan will once again be one of the most closely watched states in the country. Polls will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

Minnesota

Democratic vice presidential candidate’s home state Tim WalzMinnesota polls on Election Day will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. central time.

Mississippi

Mississippi polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central Time on Election Day.

Missouri

Polls in Missouri will be open for 13 hours on Election Day, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central Time.

Montana

Montana polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. MT, except in precincts with fewer than 400 registered voters, which may be open until noon and must close if all registered voters have cast ballots.

Nebraska

The second state with split electoral votes, Nebraska polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. for parts of the state that are in the Central Time Zone and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in parts that use Mountain Time.

Nevada

Nevada is another potentially crucial swing state and will hold open polls from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time on Election Day, making it the last of the swing states expected to close its polling places compared to the rest of the country. Nevada is almost entirely in the Pacific Time Zone, which means it won’t start reporting results until 10 p.m. ET.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire polling location hours vary by municipality, but will not close until 7 p.m. Eastern Time.

New Jersey

Polls in New Jersey on Election Day will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

New Mexico

New Mexico polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. MT.

new York

The fourth largest electoral prize in the country, New York polling places will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time.

North Carolina

Polling places in North Carolina, expected to be one of the closest swing states in 2024, will be open on Election Day, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

North Dakota

Voting hours in North Dakota vary by county, according to the secretary of state’s office. The times of the different polling stations can be found here.

Ohio

Ohio, once a swing state, is the home state of the Republican vice presidential candidate. J.D. Vancewill have its polls open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Oklahoma

Polls in Oklahoma will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. centrally.

Oregon

Polls in Oregon will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. Most of the state is in the Pacific Time Zone, although part of the eastern part of the state is in the Mountain Time Zone.

Pennsylvania

The state most likely to decide the winner of the election, Pennsylvania polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

Rhode Island

Polls in Rhode Island will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

South Carolina

Polls in South Carolina open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.

Tennessee

Tennessee polling location hours vary by county.

Texas

Polls in Texas, the state with the second highest number of electoral votes, are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Most of the state is in the Central Time Zone, although three counties in the far west of the state observe Mountain Time.

Utah

Utah polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. MT.

Vermont

According to the municipality, polls in Vermont can open between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Eastern Time. All polling stations will close at 7 p.m.

Virginia

In Virginia, polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eastern Time.

Washington

Voting hours vary in Washington, a state where every voter receives their ballot by mail. Ballots must be placed in a box by 8 p.m. Pacific Time on November 5.

West Virginia

Polls in West Virginia are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Wisconsin

Polls will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. central time in Wisconsin, one of three key Rust Belt states.

Wyoming

Wyoming polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. MT.
