SAN RAFAEL, California. – Pacific Gas & Electric notified 20,000 customers in 17 counties that the utility could cut power Tuesday, but officials also said only two polling places were in the area affected by the outage.

One polling place is at Lakeside Elementary School in Los Gatos and the other is the Calpine Geothermal Welcome Center in Middletown, Lake County, a two-hour drive north of San Francisco .

If power does indeed go out in the Bay Area, PG&E said it wouldn’t happen until 9:30 p.m. on Election Day, well after polls close.

There are a total of 7,000 Election Day polling locations in PG&E’s service area, the utility said.

“We recognize that Tuesday, November 5, is Election Day and we will do everything we can to ensure a smooth election process,” said Teresa Alvarado, vice president of PG&E’s South Bay and Central Coast region. “We began working with state and local election officials more than a month ago to ensure the reliability of polling places and tabulation centers.”

Amid total power outages expected Tuesday through Thursday, PG&E customers may be impacted in some areas of Napa, Sonoma, Contra Costa, Santa Clara and Alameda counties due to high winds and dry conditions expected this week .

The power company said its meteorologists were closely monitoring the possible wind, which could last until Thursday morning.

“While recent rainfall has reduced the fire risk, fuels are expected to dry over the coming days in dry and windy conditions, leading to increased fire concerns as stronger winds occur in the middle weekdays,” PG&E said.
