How many people voted early in Indiana in 2024?

play

During these past few days of in-person early voting, some Hoosiers waited hours in long, winding lines to vote.

These statistics offer something to show.

Marion County voters exceeded the total of early in-person votes by several thousand in 2020. Hamilton County’s early turnout rate was roughly on par with 2020. The state has not yet released its numbers.

However, mail-in voting was still much more popular in 2020, the year of the pandemic. This generally means that despite the increase in early voting, the total number of Hoosiers who voted before Election Day likely won’t break a record.

Here are the numbers. County elections officials will still count absentee ballots received until 6 p.m. on Election Day.

Marion County

  • In-person start in 2024: 133,727
  • In-person start in 2020: 130,018
  • By mail in 2024: 27,381 to date
  • By mail in 2020: 83,976

Hamilton County

  • In-person start in 2024: 98,093
  • In-person start in 2020: 98,472
  • By mail in 2024: 19,750 so far
  • By mail in 2020: 44,469

Across Indiana

As of Sunday, 1,331,000 Hoosiers had voted early in person statewide, and about 182,000 people had returned their absentee ballots. In total, about 1,529,000 people voted by mail in Indiana on Sunday, compared to about 1,868,000 total in 2020.

The state’s final tally after Monday’s early voting will be available Tuesday.
