Former hockey player Janne Puhakka died last month after being shot twice by his former partner, a Norwegian veterinarian Rolf Nordmoin the house they previously shared in Espoo, according to the latest police information on the high-profile case.

Nordmo used a hunting weapon to commit the crime, police added, for which Finnish media previously reported he held a license.

Puhakka, the first Finnish ice hockey player to publicly come out as gay, was found dead in semi-detached property in Espoo on Sunday October 13. His body was discovered by a friend who visited the house after Puhakka did not respond to calls and messages.

The police immediately suspected Nordmo of being involved in the murder, and the breakdown of the relationship a few weeks before is we think this is the motive.

Investigators have since revealed that Nordmo admitted to the killing – which police say was deliberate and particularly brutal – during questioning, but Nordmo denied the act was premeditated.

“The suspect denies any planning. I will not comment on any further details,” the detective inspector said. Matti Högmanwho is leading the investigation, told Yle.

As the investigation continues, Högman expressed confidence that the preliminary investigation will be completed well before the end of February, the deadline for filing charges.
